Built to last, the Newport-25 is a 25 kW (34 HP) inboard electric motor designed as a drop in replacement for sailboats currently using diesel engines. The motor fits into the same location, mounts on the same motor mounts, and couples to the propeller shaft in the same way as the most common sailboat diesel engines.  

Newport 25 kW Electric Motor Kit is an assembly that integrates:

    • 25 kW AC Induction Motor (HPEVs AC 34)
    • High Efficiency Motor Controller (Curtis 1234 SE)
    • Assembled with gearbox and motor frame
    • Includes, four (4) motor mounts that hold the frame to the boat hull
    • NEB-25 motor cable harness, including 25 foot cockpit cable and 20 foot LFP data cable (the high current battery cables are sold separately)
    • Cockpit Throttle and Key-switch Assembly

The motor controller is programmed to keep the propeller between 0 – 1,500 RPM (forward and reverse).  To put this in context, our Hunter 33, which has a displacement of  11,000 LBS. and a stock 3 blade propeller, will move through the water on a still day at 6.25 KTS at a propeller speed of 1200 RPMs (with the sails down, only motoring), and do so while the motor pulls about 200 Amps from the battery pack.

However, when running at 750 RPMs, the vessel will move through the same conditions at 4.5 KTS and only draw 45 Amps from the battery (75% less power)!!  At 15 Amps, the vessel moves about 3.7 knots. The point here is that there is a huge energy cost to getting the vessel to travel through the water near “hull-speed”, however with a relatively small decrease in speed, battery life increases tremendously.

Having the propeller speed limited to 1,500 RPM is not really a speed limit for the boat because you don’t want to be motoring at that speed anyway.  Save your ‘hull speed limit’ for when you’re sailing with the wind, and when motoring, keep your EV speed down around 5 KTS.

Again, the Newport-25 is best powered by the LFP battery packs sold here (S16, 51.3 volts nominal), and monitored with our Electric Vessel Monitoring System (EVMS) computer, also sold here separately.
